What is a Yaya?

I have never written a post about the meaning behind the name of this blog. The time has come...

Blooming Yaya is all about Redefining Flower Power. How?

The path to wisdom is lined with sparkling moments of insight, brilliant flashes of inspiration and quiet whispers of knowing. This path is well trodden, traveled by many women who came before us. It is within their footsteps that we journey along, it is on their shoulders that we stand.

The journey to wisdom is much like a flower in bloom, its beauty changing and evolving through the unfolding of each petal. The full bloom of womanhood, in all of its strength and power, is referred to as "Yaya" in at least two ancient cultures and traditions.

In ancient Greek, "Yaya" meant literally "woman." Today, Greek grandmothers are called "Yaya," likely because they have achieved womanhood. In an Afro-Caribbean religious sect, found mostly in Brazil and the Congo, the word "Yaya" refers to a woman who has gone through a religious initiation. It means "Mother" or "Mama Priestess."

In both cultural traditions, the word "Yaya" represents the highest form of woman, achieved only through initiation, experience and longevity. It represents, literally, the Journey to Womanhood.

Won't you join us? Grab a woman-sister, link your arm in hers and let's travel this road together. Because there is power in numbers.

I am awed to have found his website. Mysister has just become a grandmother via a step daughter. She was unsure what she wanted ot be called but knoew that grandmother was not it. Her daughter today suggested Yaya altho she had never heard of it herself but felt it was "right" . I was sure it had to have come to her for some reason and after reading oyur definition , she was right!

Hello,
When my granddaughter, who is now 2 1/2, began calling me Yaya, around 8 months, we thought it was the cutest thing. Upon research, I began to tear up, because of it's meaning, which does vary. I've heard Yaya before, i.e. divine secrets of the yaya sisterhood, and a model from Tyra Bank's America's Next Top Model Show. The model from the show stated it was African, and why her mother named her that. It truly amazes me every time I hear my precious grandchild call me Yaya. We've always said she was an old spirit, and after learning the meaning, I now know it's true. I guess Yaya will be the new Nana, and I'm proud to hold the title, because my granddaughter gave it to me.

I found out recently that I am going to be a grandmother at the age of 42...I knew for sure that I did not want to be refered to as Grandmother, Grandma, etc...I started looking up alternative names for Grandmother and found Ya-Ya .....and after finding this definition here I was absolutely sure that YA-YA had to be my name.

BTW - on the Ya-Ya sisterhood site they have a name generator, my name comes up as Queen Fiesty Pants, which was also pretty appropriate.

I am not a grandmother but my friends call me Yaya. I hope it's not offensive to anybody else.
Peace and Love.

I will soon become a grandmother and decided, about a year ago, that I would like to be called Yaya, which I only knew to mean "grandmother" in Greek. I have no connection to the Greek culture, but it was the name that felt right for me. I found this website last night and it blew me away! What a cool meaning attached to a cool name for my grandkids to call me! Thanks for your awesome site!

I refused to find out the sex was of my last child. My husband swore it was a girl and was quite upset w/ me for refusing to find out the sex. I figured that there are such few real suprises in life that not knowing the sex of our child would be great! We had a girl! After having 2 boys. We call her YaYa-God's Graciousness, in Arabic. It fits perfectly.

Having been raised in Southern Louisiana in the cajun culture, in that time period, I know what Yaya means. Basically a yaya is a precious young girl. In English you would say "isn't she a princess?" In cajun you would say "isn't she a yaya?"
